Storyboarding for Instagram Stories: what it is + when to use it

Storyboarding for Instagram Stories is a tool that is very close to my heart thanks to its ease of use and instant results.

I have previously mentioned it in my Instagram Stories article, but it’s such a lifesaver that it deserves more screen time. 

So here we are!

This article will look at the origins of storyboarding (hint: it goes back to the early 1930s!) and most importantly, why it’s quite ubiquitous.

Major brands and influencers use this technique all the time.

And once you’ll know its ins and outs, you’ll start spotting it by yourself.

What is storyboarding?

Put simply, storyboarding is the visual outline of a video.

(In this case, a series of Instagram Stories.)

What does a storyboard contain?

A storyboard shows scenes or ideas in a chronological sequence in order to pre-visualize the complete story.

A little bit of history…

If you’re a history nerd, you’ll love to know that the storyboarding process was developed at Walt Disney Productions during the early 1930s.

Ok, but…

Why should you storyboard your Instagram Stories?

On to the good stuff:

Look at storyboarding as a tool for planning your Instagram Stories content so that it can easily transport viewers from A to B.

Storyboarding is most effective when there is a clear conclusion, result or outcome at the end to neatly wrap things up.

Save storyboarding for when you have a campaign coming out or for when you want to *softly* nudge your audience into purchasing/subscribing/interacting with something you offer.
