DAIANA (EVERYTHING HERE NOW): How did you start out?

VIVIAN CHAN (SETTE): After years of climbing the corporate ladder, I didn’t feel appreciated. I’ve experienced how the system is working against talented and hardworking people who are committed to making positive changes to create impact. I realized that I don’t belong to that kind of environment and culture. So I was determined to work for myself so that I get to decide how to run a company and do things the right way.

I accidentally discovered the world of entrepreneurship and online businesses in 2017. I was very intrigued by all the new things I’ve discovered. Eventually I started my own web design and development business as the next logical step but it somehow never felt aligned.

I’ve always loved helping people grow, and leveraging their talents. Seeing signs of growth in people is what fuels me. And once I discovered what my top 5 strengths are through CliftonStrengths, everything began to make sense. I started to make connections of my talents and realized how unique I am.

When deciding which path I should take next, my mentor helped me come to the realization that I actually wanted to be a coach. Come to think about it, the seed was planted inside me when I first discovered coaching back in 2017. I didn’t pursue it back then because I had some limiting beliefs, like “Who am I to be a coach”. With the encouragement from my mentor, I pivoted and started my journey as a coach in 2019.

DAIANA (EVERYTHING HERE NOW): What will 2021 look like for you and Sette?

VIVIAN CHAN (SETTE): I feel like quite a few good things have happened to me and my business (counting my blessings) last year, despite some major life challenges. One door of opportunity has led to another opportunity, which I’m very grateful for. This year, I want to focus on showing up more to share my message, building more meaningful relationships with other business owners,  and doing more collaborations with others.I also have a few passion projects that I want to bring to life. So I’m excited to see what I’m going to make happen this year!

DAIANA (EVERYTHING HERE NOW): As a one-person business, how can one make the most of the time they put into their business?

VIVIAN CHAN (SETTE): I like this question. I bet you agree that we all have limited time, energy and focus. And there will always be more things to be completed than time. To make the most of your precious time, you need to stop for a moment and ask yourself these important questions, “Where am I heading?”, “What’s important to me?”, “What are the important things/tasks that will move the needle?” The catalyst is identifying “needle movers”. So get clear of what you’re after, and focus on tasks/projects that drive your business forward instead of just keeping it going.

DAIANA (EVERYTHING HERE NOW): What is a common pitfall new solopreneurs face that should be addressed before it goes too far?

VIVIAN CHAN (SETTE): Trying to get everything perfect, before getting something out the door. For example, “tweaking” website copy and design for months and procrastinating on launching it because you feel “it’s not ready”.

Your business will evolve and change as you grow as a solopreneur. Your branding will change, your overall messaging and services you offer may also change as your target audience shifts. Whatever you have right now is not necessarily what it’ll be like in the near future. Trust that when you move forward to the next stage, you’ll have the chance to make improvements and make things better and more in alignment with your bigger vision. Process is better than perfection.

DAIANA (EVERYTHING HERE NOW): What are the top 3 resources that help a business succeed?

VIVIAN CHAN (SETTE):

    1. Mailerlite for email marketing. It’s a powerful email service provider that delivers automation capabilities without the steep price. It’s also very budget friendly and doesn’t make it harder for you when your list grows.
    2. Showit Platform for website and blog. It’s a website platform that gives you the creative freedom to create and design the website the way you want it, without knowing how to code! You can design your website theme in Showit, and publish your blog posts in WordPress. You get the best of both worlds! There are also many beautiful and high quality Showit website themes out there to help you launch your website fast!
    3. Full Focus Planner to protect your priorities and make time for what matters most!  I use the Full Focus Planner to plan my day, and keep my to-do list in control, so that I can focus on what matters most and feel accomplished at the end of the day.

DAIANA (EVERYTHING HERE NOW): What would you say to someone who hesitates taking the next step?

VIVIAN CHAN (SETTE): Remember, you’re not failing if things don’t turn out exactly like what you envisioned. You’re learning from each experience and building yourself up for future success.

Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Don’t wait for more experience before taking the next step. What you can do now is to take that first step. One step. It could be as simple as picking a day this week and setting a 20-minute timer to a research on topic/challenge X.

Trust yourself that you’ll be able to navigate through uncertainty and challenges as they arise. You’ll be able to get help and course correct when things don’t go too well. And even when things don’t turn out exactly how you hoped for, it doesn’t mean you’re not good enough or you’re not capable.

DAIANA (EVERYTHING HERE NOW): How should a solopreneur define success when starting out?

VIVIAN CHAN (SETTE): Don’t use others’ measuring yardstick to measure your success. You define your own. Success means different things to different people. It can also change and evolve as you grow. My piece of advice is to not ask questions like, “How far “I should be” when I’m X months/years into my business”. Instead of defining your success based on the “should-bes”, ask yourself honestly what’s important to you, where you want to be and why, and what success looks like to YOU. It’s okay to not want the same thing that other people do.

DAIANA (EVERYTHING HERE NOW): What is your best piece of advice on gaining clarity for your business path?

VIVIAN CHAN (SETTE): Whenever you feel stuck and not knowing which path to take, standing at the crossroad of two paths and doing nothing will not help you gain more clarity. It’s only through a series of consistent actions that you will slowly see more, feel more and eventually have that feeling in your gut that tells you “this is the right path”. Remember, clarity comes from engagement, not thought. I first heard that from Marie Forleo.

Action matters more than ideas. The best way to figure out if something will work out for you or not is to take meaningful actions and start small. Instead of waiting for days, weeks or months to wait for clarity to strike you, do everything you can, and as quickly as possible to move toward your potential paths/choices/options. Ask yourself, “what can I do today to test out my idea/path that I’ve in mind?”

To gain more clarity about an idea, start by making hypotheses/assumptions. Do experiments to test each hypothesis, learn and feel from each experiment, refine the idea and test again. By following this cycle of hypothesize, experiment, measure outcomes, learn/feel, hypothesize again, you’ll be able to gain more clarity and activate on ideas, instead of staying at the same spot and wondering if this or that will ever work or not.

Thank you Vivian! 🤗
